What Materials Should My Tarp Be Made Of?

Our materials use Polyethylene which is a great choice for a number of reasons. Poly tarps are the most affordable option, and they can have different purposes. You can choose between light duty to cover or decorate some backyard applications and super heavy duty for superior protection. Our poly tarps are useful for patio furniture, construction sites, warehouses, camping settlements, factories, and other facilities.
The poly tarps are waterproof, UV-rated, and great for short-term protection. They are custom made with the colors, sizes, and accessories you choose. Over time, the tarps could suffer from disintegration from too much sunlight exposure. Cold temperatures could also cause slow damage. The tarps do not usually last as long as vinyl or canvas covers though, in the right conditions, you can greatly extend their lifespan.
It is important to choose the correct features before purchasing a tarp. Every tarp is different – their uses range from outdoor camping sites, industrial complexes, and home gardens. Your valuables will stay dry, free from mold, and away from any UV light. Choose wisely before purchasing anything.
Are there any special features to choose from?

When shopping for a tarp, you will notice specific descriptions such as rot resistance, lamination, built-in grommets, weave, and more. These tarp features will help you in finalizing your decision.
The first thing you should check out is the thickness. Here, we use the unit mil to measure how thick a tarp is. One inch is equal to 1,000 mils. Depending on how strong you want the tarp to be, you should aim at higher numbers. Here is how normally look:
- Lightweight tarps are usually between 5 and 8 Mils
- Medium weight tarps are usually between 9 and 10 Mils
- Heavy duty tarps are usually between 12 and 13 Mils
- Super heavy duty tarps are usually between 16 and 24 Mils
The next thing we need to consider is the size. Before making the final decision, take the time to calculate what the final size would be. Remember - the producers never provide the exact size as their advertisements. Usually, you will get a tarp from 3 to 7 inches shorter on every dimension. This happens because the manufacturers measure the tarp before any hemming at the edges.
Poly tarps usually have one or a few layers of polyethylene film. Tarps with more layers will survive for longer periods of time. They can go through harsher exposure to the weather elements.
There is a wide range of colors to choose from. While you can go for what suits your taste, some of these colors bring specific benefits. Silver tarps can easily block off any sunlight and keep you cool during the summer. White tarps can create a fresh shade to stay under, but will also allow some sunlight to pass through them. Other tarp colors, such as orange, green, blue, red, brown, and purple, are useful for construction sites, landscaping, warehouses, camping, and so on.
A few important features to look for are whether the tarp is waterproof, water resistant, or mold and mildew resistant. Usually, poly tarps are waterproof, but some of them are only water resistant and nothing else. By using them, not a single droplet of water will ever touch your equipment or belongings.
Another problem could occur when a lot of water has accumulated on top. That could lead to problems with rot. Mold and mildew are annoying to deal with. All they need is some heat and moisture, and you will find a small infestation by the next morning. If you want to avoid that, search for a strong, mold resistant tarp.
An important feature to have would be grommets. These metal rings are around the tarp’s edges. They allow you to easily tie down the tarp without worrying the wind will blow it away. Their sizes are different but usually are anywhere between 17 and 37 inches. The distance between each grommet is usually 18 inches. The ideal materials for grommets would be aluminum, plated steel, and brass. They are rust proof and will last for long periods of time. Aluminum can handle light-duty purposes while brass is great for super heavy duty tarps.
